Hobbyweld 15 (Ultra)

Hobbyweld 15 (Ultra) is the larger, higher-capacity version of the 15 shielding gas, made for welders who get through a good amount of gas. It’s the same argon, carbon dioxide and oxygen tri-mix with around 15% CO2, but supplied in a 20-litre cylinder at 300 bar, which gives a lot more run time before you need a refill.

The 15% carbon dioxide content lets you weld up to around 18mm in steel thickness, so it’s well suited to heavier gauges and the kind of general metal fabrication done in engineering workshops. It’s a trimix shielding gas built for heavier-duty gas welding jobs rather than the lightest sheet work.

What makes the Ultra range easy to live with is the connection. The cylinder has a built-in regulator so you can adjust your flow rate directly, and the push-fit system takes seconds to connect, with no separate regulator to fit. If your demand is lighter, the Original 15 cylinder is the smaller 9-litre version of the same gas.

How is the Ultra different from the Original?

It’s the same 15% CO2 argon tri-mix, but in a bigger cylinder: 20 litres at 300 bar rather than the Original’s 9 litres at 137 bar. That gives much more welding time between refills, and the Ultra cylinder has a built-in regulator and push-fit connection. The Original is the smaller, lighter option.

What thickness of steel can it weld?

The 15% CO2 content lets you weld up to around 18mm in steel thickness, which suits heavier gauges and engineering-type fabrication. For thinner sheet under about 7mm, Hobbyweld 5 is the better mix.

Do I need a separate regulator?
