Reclaimed Azobe Hardwood Railway Sleepers Now in Stock
We’ve just had a delivery of Grade A Reclaimed Azobe hardwood railway sleepers in at Harringtons of Reading. With the Reclaimed Oak sleepers that arrived a few weeks back, we now stock a proper range of premium reclaimed hardwood railway sleepers for UK gardens and landscaping projects.
Azobe hardwood – known as Lophira alata, Ekki, or red Ironwood – is an African tropical timber. It’s prized for its density and durability, and it was widely used across European railway networks. The tight grain structure protects the wood naturally, which is exactly why it’s become so sought-after for British gardens.

Strength and Durability Characteristics
Azobe’s durability isn’t just marketing talk – it’s down to measurable physical properties. Each Grade A sleeper weighs around 100 kilograms and measures 250mm by 150mm by 2600mm. That weight tells you something about the strength you’re getting.
This strength means genuine longevity. The railway sleepers we have are typically 50 to 60 years old, yet they’re structurally sound enough to last decades more in a garden setting. Some sources suggest Azobe handles even underwater use, though most customers are focused on above-ground work: retaining walls, raised beds, and sturdy garden edging.
The timber takes British weather without fuss. Rain, frost, summer heat – Azobe copes with all of it. You might spot surface imperfections: small cracks, knots, maybe a bit of wane at the edges, paint marks or dirt from railway work. These aren’t defects – they’re character. Most clean up nicely with a jet washer if you want them tidier.
What really matters for landscaping is the core strength. If you’re building something that needs to bear weight, resist soil pressure, or just stay solid for years without replacement, Azobe’s got you covered.

Comparing Azobe vs Reclaimed Oak Sleepers
The reclaimed oak sleepers we took in recently have real appeal of their own. Oak has that traditional character many people love, and it’s genuinely beautiful timber. But when you compare them side by side, some clear differences show up that might matter for your project.
Azobe is substantially denser than oak. It resists ground contact degradation more effectively and handles heavier structural loads without the risk of sagging or splitting over time. Planning a retaining wall to hold back serious earth? Azobe’s greater density becomes relevant. The same goes for raised beds that need to support considerable weight in wet soil.
Oak sleepers work beautifully for plenty of applications – especially where looks matter most and structural demands aren’t severe. For lighter edging, decorative borders, or smaller raised planters, oak’s easier workability (it’s still hardwood, mind you) can actually be an advantage.
The real question isn’t which is “better” overall. It’s about matching material to the job. Azobe shines in heavy-duty contexts: substantial retaining structures, high-traffic areas, or situations where you need maximum longevity with zero maintenance. Oak excels where traditional appearance matters most and you don’t have severe structural demands. Choose based on what your project actually needs.

Applications in UK Landscaping
Grade A reclaimed timber sleepers serve various practical purposes, especially where strength counts. Retaining walls are probably the toughest application – holding back earth needs genuine structural capacity, and Azobe delivers. Terraced gardens are popular too, particularly on sloped sites where you need to create level areas.
Raised beds are another common use, particularly the larger ones. Building something a metre high or more? The stability and safety combined (no treatment means no worries about growing food) make these durable railway sleepers worth considering. The weight helps keep things stable without fancy fixings.
For heavy-duty edging along driveways, where vehicles might occasionally mount the border, Azobe prevents the cracking or splintering that lighter materials can suffer. Steps or ground structures that see regular foot traffic also benefit from the wear resistance.
Some customers use them for water features or pond edging. Azobe handles moisture brilliantly, so it’s proper construction technique that makes the difference.
Less common, but possible, is creating substantial planters or outdoor seating with storage built in. When you’re working with timber this robust, structures can take on a semi-permanent feel – somewhere between garden furniture and garden architecture.
Ordering and Delivery Details
Ordering is straightforward. You’ll find full details and current availability on our product page for reclaimed hardwood tropical sleepers. We deliver across our standard area covering Reading, Berkshire and surrounding postcodes – check our website for the full list of postcodes if you want to confirm you’re in range.
Here’s something that surprises people: we charge a flat delivery fee of £25 no matter how many sleepers you order. Three or thirty – it’s still £25. For bigger projects needing multiple sleepers (and given each weighs 100kg, you’ll appreciate not lugging them yourself), that flat rate makes budgeting much simpler.
Given the current demand for azobe wood landscaping materials around Reading and the UK, we’d suggest not hanging about if you’re planning a project for this season. Stock tends not to stick around long.
These are durable, untreated hardwood timbers ideal for demanding landscaping work that needs long-lasting structural strength. Combined with reclaimed oak, we can help you pick the right material for what you’re actually building. If you’d like to discuss which might suit your plans, get in touch with our team.
