Hobbyweld
Hobbyweld 5 (Original)
From: £65.00
Hobbyweld 5 (Original) is a bestselling MIG shielding gas, ideal for thinner sheet steel. It’s an argon tri-mix, roughly 93% argon, 5% CO2 and 2% oxygen, sometimes called an argon shield, and the lower CO2 content makes it well suited to mild steel under about 7mm, such as car bodywork and light sheet work.
Compared with straight CO2, it reduces the chance of porosity, spatter and oxidation, which gives a cleaner, sounder weld at a low cost. That’s why it’s a favourite for vehicle restoration, classic cars and motorcycles. This is the Original cylinder: 9 litres at 137 bar.
A cylinder of this type needs a suitable regulator to set your flow. We deliver across our defined Reading area, so check your postcode is covered, or call the yard on 0118 9242888.

Hobbyweld 5 (Original) is one of the most popular shielding gases for MIG welding, and it’s the one to choose for thinner steel. It’s a unique blend of argon, carbon dioxide and oxygen, roughly 93% argon, 5% CO2 and 2% oxygen, often called a tri-mix or argon shield. The lower carbon dioxide content makes it particularly suited to sheet metal and thin sections of mild steel under about 7mm, like car bodywork and light sheet work.
The mix earns its keep on quality. Compared with straight carbon dioxide, Hobbyweld 5 reduces the chance of porosity, welding spatter and oxidation, so you get a sound, tidy weld at a low cost. That makes it a firm favourite for vehicle restoration and bringing classic cars and motorcycles back to life, as well as general light fabrication.
This is the Original cylinder, with a 9-litre water capacity at 137 bar, used with a suitable welding regulator to set and read your flow. If you weld thicker steel as well, Hobbyweld 15 is the higher-CO2 mix for sections from around 7mm up.
