Hobbyweld
Hobbyweld 5 (Ultra)
From: £140.00
Hobbyweld 5 (Ultra) is the high-capacity version of the 5 mix, a bestselling MIG shielding gas for thinner sheet steel. It’s the same argon tri-mix, around 93% argon, 5% CO2 and 2% oxygen, but in a bigger 20-litre cylinder at 300 bar, so you get much more welding time between refills.
The low CO2 content suits sheet metal and mild steel under about 7mm, like car bodywork and light sheet work. Compared with straight CO2, it cuts the chance of porosity, spatter and oxidation, giving a clean, sound weld, which is why it’s a favourite for vehicle restoration and classic cars and motorcycles.
This is the Ultra cylinder, the one to choose if you weld a fair amount and want fewer changes. We deliver across our defined Reading area, so check your postcode is covered, or call the yard on 0118 9242888.

Hobbyweld 5 (Ultra) is the larger, higher-capacity version of the popular 5 shielding gas, for welders who get through plenty of gas. It’s the same blend of argon, carbon dioxide and oxygen, around 93% argon with 5% CO2, but supplied in a 20-litre cylinder at 300 bar, which gives a lot more run time before a refill.
Like the Original, it’s at its best on thinner steel. The low carbon dioxide content suits sheet metal and thin sections of mild steel under about 7mm, such as car bodywork and light sheet work. Against straight carbon dioxide, the mix reduces porosity, welding spatter and oxidation, so you get a sound, tidy weld at a low running cost. That makes it a go-to for vehicle restoration and bringing classic cars and motorcycles back to life.
This is the Ultra cylinder, the choice when you want fewer changes mid-project. If your demand is lighter, the Original 5 cylinder is the smaller 9-litre version of the same gas.
We deliver across our defined postcode area around Reading. Check your postcode is covered before ordering, or call the yard on 0118 9242888 to talk through the cylinder and how to refill it.
FAQs
How is the Ultra different from the Original?
It’s the same 5% CO2 argon tri-mix, but in a bigger cylinder: 20 litres at 300 bar rather than the Original’s 9 litres at 137 bar. That gives much more welding time between refills. The Original is the smaller, lighter option for lighter use.
What’s Hobbyweld 5 best for?
It’s a MIG shielding gas for thinner steel, suited to sheet metal and mild steel under about 7mm, such as car bodywork and light sheet work. It gives a cleaner weld with less spatter than straight CO2, which is why it’s a favourite for vehicle restoration.
Should I use Hobbyweld 5 or 15?
Use Hobbyweld 5 for thin sheet under about 7mm. Use Hobbyweld 15, with its higher 15% CO2, for thicker steel from around 7mm up. Both are argon tri-mixes for MIG welding. The difference is the CO2 content and the steel thickness they suit.
